Zhengzhou, Henan, China E-mail: shijiesuidaodahui@163.com Abstract: Shantou Gulf Tunnel is constructed by large diameter slurry shield machine with accessible cutterhead. The geology of the whole drive is complex with boulders and protruding bedrock. Hence disc cutters are prone to be damaged, resulting in frequent cutter replacement. In order to accurately keep track of disc cutter status and improve the accuracy of manual sampling, a real-time disc cutter status diagnosis system suitable for accessible cutterhead is developed, as well as a tunnel face analysis technology which is based on disc cutter status monitoring. This paper describes in detail the disc cutter status detection device, and how to analyze the tunnel face geology according to the disc cutter status. Through the application in Shantou Gulf Tunnel, it is proved that the system can accurately recognize various failure forms of disc cutter, and analyze the geology of the tunnel face, so as to provide basis for disc cutter replacement and guidance for tunneling parameter optimization.
