Different excavation methods for railway tunnels have been considered for two different projects in Norway. Both projects are located within densely populated areas close to Oslo and designed to combine high speed and high capacity for the future operation of trains. The excavation of the tunnels was required to be performed within a limited time frame. This paper provides general pertinent details and facts relating to these two different projects including a description of the relevant parameters that led to a choice of different excavation methods for the two projects.
