This paper presents a detailed evaluation of airport runway settlement behavior during construction of passenger terminal connecting railway twin tunnels (1,150 m long) by 7.9 m diameter EPB shield TBM in soft ground. The instrumented settlement data are analyzed to evaluate the surface settlement trough occurred by TBM tunneling. The maximum settlement is controlled within about 25 mm at the runway surface during tunnel construction. TBM operation parameters are also evaluated to investigate short and long-term settlement damage in the runway area. The field data are compared with the results computed by theoretical solution. It is concluded that the shield TBM operations are very successfully managed during tunneling under the existing runway and taxiway at Incheon International Airport. Results could be useful to predict the settlements in soft ground during TBM tunneling.
