In civil tunneling time and cost are closely related, the contractors usually run their projects with time reduction as a major target. However, keeping the excavated tunnel profile as close as possible to the desired plan is equally important, thus minimizing extra cost and the risk of penalties. When the tunnel profile shape or size changes, or when rock conditions affect the excavation, time consuming adjustments of the drill plan usually demand good planning or an experienced operator. Another time consuming task which is also a safety hazard is manually marking up the rock prior to bolt hole drilling. By generating the drill plan on the machine itself, several activities in the working cycle can be removed while the quality of the tunnel increases. Atlas Copco’s Dynamic Tunneling Package is an example of the type of innovation needed to deliver these benefits for future tunnel projects.
