The double railway line Cefalù Ogliastrillo–Castelbuono is a stretch of nearly 12.3 km within the doubling of the Palermo-Messina railway line in Italy, which includes 3 tunnels. Cefalù Tunnel (L=6.7 km long, single track, double tube) will be excavated through the hills surrounding the city of Cefalù with a maximum overburden of 130 m, with a “dual mode” EPB TBM, with an excavation diameter of 9.90 m. S. Ambrogio Tunnel (L=4.0 km, double track, single tube) crosses the area between the cities of Cefalù and Castelbuono with a maximum overburden of 300 m and will be excavated with a “single shield” TBM, with an excavation diameter of 12.10 m. During the design phase a peculiar software for fire analyses of tunnel linings was developed by the designer: it allows to evaluate the temperature distribution and the induced stresses within the tunnel lining during a fire event.
