East Coast Zone of Indian Railway has planned 445km of additional railway line to support the transportation of metal ore and coal to major ports of east India along with movement of passenger traffic in state of Odisha. The project includes construction of more than 50 tunnels all with unique challenges. RITES Limited is awarded the work for preparing the Detailed Project Report for design of four tunnels in Laxmipur - Baiguda section. The proposed railway tunnels lie in densely forested region with variety of flora and fauna. The initial proposal by client included large distances between existing and proposed railway lines and high cuttings for construction of tunnel portals. This paper elaborates the approach adopted by RITES Ltd. to optimize the excavation to reduce environmental loss by minimum impact to existing flora and fauna. The distance between proposed and existing railway track was also reduced to minimize land acquisition thus reducing social and environment impacts expected from construction of tunnels. This paper further mentions the value addition proposals proposed to client to add to the sustainability of the project. These proposals for sustainable construction raised other challenges to which solutions were proposed and are discussed in this technical paper.
