Jointed rock massslope stability analysis for tunnel portal development - A Case Study
RITES was given the consultancy services to design the slope protection works around the tunnel portal T77A-P1 in DharamQuaziqund section of the 345km long prestigious USBRL project in J&K, India, for the operational safety of the railway line. This portal is at mid height of the hill and is connected with a rail bridge to its immediate vicinity. The slopes around the portal are steep and comprised of jointed weathered phyllite. The slopes around the portal were divided into 4 different zones for analysis. This paper includes the derivation of shear strength design parameters for the design of rock slopes. Shear strength Reduction (SSR) analysis was carried out to assess global stability of the slopes in each zone using RS2 software from Rocscience. Kinematic analysis was also carried out to check the possibility of wedge and topple failure of the jointed rock slope using Swedge and RocTopple software from Rocscience. Henceforth, the support system for the slope in each zone was proposed to attain the required factor of safety in static and seismic conditions.Recipient :
