In the last two decades, the use of the fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) and its advantages, met approval in several projects of tunnels made in mechanized excavation. In urban areas, sometimes, the FRC solution alone cannot meet the requirements and a possible hybrid solution, consists of glass fiber reinforced polymer bars (GFRP) and FRC can be adopted to increase the performance of the lining. Studies available in literature confirmed the feasibility of the proposed solution. A new solution has been used, for the first time, for the realization of T3 section of the Rome metro Line C. The section extends for 2.8 km, with two new stations (Amba Aradam/Ipponio and Fori Imperiali) and two ventilation shafts (Via Sannio and Piazza Celimontana). The section under construction was built using an Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPB TBM). The project consists of two tunnels 6.40 m diameter each. TBM thrust and flexural full-scale tests, for the evaluation of the structural performances under transient phase and ultimate limit state of tunnel segments, were carried out too. The obtained results are compared with the ones on FRC segments. Based on the results obtained, the effectiveness of the proposed technical solution is highlighted.
