In recent years, the construction industry in Japan suffers a huge shortage of skilled workers due to aging population, and to make up for these problems, we are promoting the mechanization and automation of construction works. However, the placement of tunnel lining concrete is carried out in a narrow and closed traveling formwork and the compaction work by human power using internal vibrators is still performed. Therefore, the authors had developed a new automatic concrete placement system in combination with a concrete pumping truck. This system, with the use of a high fluidity lining concrete needing no compaction, is able to eliminate the necessity of complex vibrator operations and manual switching of pneumatic pipelines. This paper discusses the characteristics of the high fluidity lining concrete and the automatic concrete placement system for tunnel lining.
