The City Rail Link (CRL) in Auckland, New Zealand is the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand with project cost up to $4.4B. The CRL is 3.5km twin-tunnel underground rail tunnel underneath Auckland's city centre, between Britomart Transport Centre and Mount Eden Railway Station to better connects the Auckland rail network. This paper describes the design challenges for precast concrete segmental lining with tight radii, down to 141m. The paper also discusses the design of cross passage openings including value engineering, breakout configurations and the optimised temporary support system which relies on shear cones and first stage concrete at tunnel invert.
