Tunnelling excavation might lead to surface structural damages due to settlement occurrence. Therefore, maximum settlement must be evaluated as accurate as possible before tunnelling excavation. In this investigation, an Expert Settlement Evaluation Model (ESEM) has been developed by using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) method to evaluate maximum settlement occurred by tunnelling activities. This expert model stores real cases in its database such as geotechnical/geological features as well as their actual maximum settlements from previous tunnelling projects/cases. Then, the most similar stored case will be retrieved from database to be used to evaluate maximum settlement for a new case. Finally, actual features and real maximum settlement of new case will be stored in database to make the model more intelligent and accurate for its future applications. In this case, 93 real cases extracted from Niayesh tunnelling project and have been used to develop ESEM and results showed that the maximum settlements for new cases were evaluated as accurate as ±2 mm.
