Grand Paris Line 16 Tunnel Connection: Comparison between Different Types of Ground Treatment
Line 16, a 30 km long underground metro line with 10 stations, is a part of a huge construction programme of over 200 km of automatic metro line with 68 stations in the Paris region. In terms of geology, the project is located in a heterogeneous sedimentary sequence consisting of series of marls, limestone and fine sand, typical for the Paris region. Several connections between tunnels and shafts are necessary for ventilation and emergency access. The majority of these connecting galleries are located in a typical Parisian layer called “sable de Beauchamp” (hereafter Beauchamp Sands). Different types of ground treatment are possible in this particular layer: jet grouting or ground freezing. A shaft was built to test these different methods. In this article, we will present the results of this experimentation and describe how the latter were eventually used to select the most appropriate ground treatment method for this project. KEYWORD: Tunnelling 1.
