Qiantang River Bo’ao Tunnel Project crosses beneath the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China where the river width is 1,300m and the average depth is 10m. With the total length of approximately 1,680m and the excavation diameter of 11.7m, the tunnel is constructed with shield tunneling method and travels through complex geological conditions, such as silt, clay and approximately 500m length of fullface round gravel geology. Based on this project, the paper briefly introduces the project overview and multiple technical difficulties, including advancing in a long distance, passing through round gravel geology and preventing mud cake formation. It also discusses the structure design and manufacture of the cutter head, new and multi-layer layout design and wear-resistant technology of cutting tools, tail shield freezing and emergency sealing technology of the slurry shield machine. Meanwhile, the paper presents the performance of two slurry shield machines in the project, and gives a prospect of shield machine promotion and application in cross-river and cross-sea tunnel projects.
