The tunnel alignment of KVMRT – SBK Line traverses below the existing Pasar Seni LRT Station in Kuala Lumpur. The tunnel alignment passed through the toe of piles supporting the railway structures, which were required to remain open to the public during tunnel construction. No foundation settlements were tolerated at any time. Structural underpinning works were carried out to make these piles redundant, followed by the temporary caisson shaft and mined adit excavation to remove the affected pile sections. Severe site constraints and the sensitivity of the operating railway structures to underpinning and pile removal required an innovative and flexible approach to temporary works. This paper focuses on the challenges in underpinning the existing operating railway structures as well as the complex mined adit excavation for pile removal in which the innovative and novel approach of mined adit construction enabled a successful tunnelling operation with no significant impact on the operating railway station.
