Strategic Underground Space and Cavern Development

Strategic Underground Space and Cavern Development

id222

M. Bettelini / A. Cornaro / M. Rehbock

The use of underground spaces is becoming increasingly interesting, as surface space in cities becomes sparse and precious. Climate change increases the need for cities to protect themselves from flooding, major storms etc. Underground spaces can make cities more resilient to master these disasters and to keep functioning, by hosting vital services, like power distribution, fresh-water supply and data centres. Large span underground caverns are increasingly used for diverse applications, from logistics, production, utilities, storage to entertainment. Building large cavern spaces in urban areas in the right geological conditions constitutes a strategic asset in providing additional space and freeing up surface space for other uses. Specific challenges are related to structural issues, construction technologies and logistics, geotechnical challenges, fire and safety, and a well-planned and smooth integration with existing urban textures etc.
