Mutual interaction between parallel tunnels inside a weak rock mass under high overburden: The Brenner Base Tunnel experience
During the excavation of the exploratory tunnel and the two cavities for the construction of the Brenner Base project through a particularly fault-ridden area, an intensive monitoring system was installed on the consolidation and support elements. This instrumentation measured the deformations of the excavated rock mass, the stresses induced by the excavation on the structures and the stress increments on the support system of the exploratory tunnel due to the passage of the two main tunnels, which run parallel to each other at a distance of about 30 m above it. Some back-analyses based on the measured state of stress on the monitored structures, with reference to the applied constitutive law for the equivalent continuous medium, allowed the reconstruction of the amplitude of the area subject to excavation disturbance in all the phases of construction taken into consideration. The measurements together with the results of the back-analyses summarized in this paper can give some interesting information about the mutual interaction between parallel cavities excavated inside a very weak rock mass.: Mutual Interaction, Parallel Tunnels, Stress Increment.Recipient :
