Innovative solution for the excavation of the tunnels of the Line C of the underground of Rome, adjacent to the ancient Porta Asinaria of Aurelian Walls
Section T3 (Colosseo - San Giovanni) of the Line C of the underground of Rome, currently under construction, extends across the city’s historical centre and very near (sometimes underground crossing) monuments dating back to the age of the ancient Romans. For this reason, to reduce settlement, extremely effective innovative technical solutions were devised; this paper illustrates the solution applied to the easternmost portion of T3 section, linking to the San Giovanni station, already constructed and in service. The situation is as follows: two tunnels have to be excavated by the traditional method, (length of approximately 180 m), in a position which, from a planimetric point of view, is very near to the Aurelian walls (Imperial Rome’s ancient walls) and, in particular, to the watchtowers of Porta Asinaria. The excavation is executed under groundwater level, through fluvial-lacustrine soils, the excavation face being constituted of silt and clay, while the vault and the invert consist of sand and highly permeable gravel, respectively. Therefore, it was necessary, on one side, to improve the ground in order to reduce settlement and, on the other, to waterproof coarser portions, in order to prevent water and solids from seeping through.Recipient :
