Under earthquake loading, the immersion joint, regarded as both weak and vital part as well as the sensitive part to deformation in immersed tunnels, could be likely damaged and no solutions about earthquake reduction of it can be found so far. With the rapid development of ultralong immersed tunnels, i.e. the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao link immersed tunnel, this problem needs to be paid increasing attention. In this paper, based on a seismic mitigation device, i.e. buckling restrained brace (BRB), a new concept of an energy-dissipated method for enhancing the seismic performance of the immersion joint was proposed and the technical feasibility of it was considered by a structural experiment. Two main cases, with and without seismic-mitigated equipment respectively, were carried out under the same loading protocol. The test results indicate that the hysteretic performance of the immersion joint with such equipment enhances about 69%.
