Sediment-sluicing tunnel constructed neighboring to an existing earth dam with innovative design, construction and monitoring technology
Zengwen Reservoir is the largest reservoir in capacity in Taiwan. Typhoon Morakot in 2009 brought extreme precipitation with sediments of 90 million cubic meters to the reservoir, had reduced its effective capacity less than 69%. Rehabilitation for the reservoir is necessary to mitigate problems caused by sediments. A sediment sluicing tunnel that is going to be built neighboring to the dam, with many proposed countermeasures, to void turbidity current with high sediment contents. The construction of the tunnel within a dam in operation with frequent and huge variations of water level is quite a challenge. A couple of innovative methods and techniques are developed regarding the design and construction of the tunnel accordingly, especially the intake section using an elephanttrunk shape steel pipe and the outlet section that comprises plunge and stilling pools. Related design, construction issues and monitoring works are introduced in this manuscript.Recipient :
