The tunnels and the underground station of the Zurich Cross Rail can be characterized as extremely challenging and is at the limit of the technical feasibility. In tunnelling the growing complexity of technical problems as well as the high safety level required during construction call increasingly for a methodical procedure in the analysis and handling of risks. It is of vital interest that a powerful risk management had to be established and should be in a living process until the end of construction. The risk management and ability of overcoming severe incidents are the touchstone of teamwork of the involved parties: client, engineer and contractorThe effectivity and efficiency of the used risk management concept and the subsequent procedures was proved during the undesired incident in April 2009 caused by a collapse of the working chamber of the jacked pipe shield (Ø 2m TBM hydroshield drive).
