For each project with an EPB-Shield and its unique soil conditions it’s required to specify the properties of the conditioning agents as well as the properties of the conditioned soil and to determine and monitor these properties. The testing of conditioning agents and conditioned soils in the laboratory helps to enable a successful tunnel drive. Because of that the most important types of soil conditioning agents and their applicability for different soils will be presented. Laboratory tests to determine properties of conditioned soil will be explained. Based on laboratory research concepts for the soil conditioning for two projects with EPB-Shields in Germany were developed. The important role of the choice of an adequate conditioning agent for the ground properties will be explained. The project experiences have shown that laboratory tests with conditioning agents and conditioned soils supported a successful EPB tunnel drive in complex ground conditions.
