3D laser scanners can make detailed measurements of the configuration of objects such as structures and may be used to measure two-dimensionally the surface configuration of a tunnel wall, and technology to apply this equipment to measure displacement of tunnels has recently been developed. However, measurements using a 3D laser scanner can obtain only the surface configurations at the moment of measurement, and cannot track the displacement path taken by any particular selected point on the surface from its previously measured position. Thus, it has not been possible to accurately obtain the amount of displacement of the selected point. The authors of this article developed a displacement measurement system using an image processing technique (template matching). With this technique, the location of the selected point can be identified from the minute geometrical irregularities of the tunnel’s shotcreted surface out of the 3D laser scanner measurement results, and the amount of displacement can be calculated by tracking the movement of that point.
