Engineering Design and Construction of Underground Power House Caverns of Mangdechhu Hydro-Electric Project (720MW), Bhutan
During the excavation of the underground powerhouse complex a shear/fracture zone of approximate 8m thickness, intersecting both the caverns was encountered. Presence of the shear zone necessitated detailed rock mechanics studies for re-evaluation of excavation methodology and support system. To ensure the stability of the caverns and efficacy of the revised support system numerical modeling and monitoring of the caverns by the aid of systematic geotechnical instrumentation, was undertaken. The excavation of both caverns was successfully completed by optimizing excavation methodology, insitu treatment of rock mass, application of the revised support system and subsequent monitoring the rock mass behavior, thereby ensuring the stability of the structures. Advanced and systematic excavation planning, rock support system, instrumentation monitoring and numerical modeling helped in successful completion of excavation works.Recipient :
