During the design of the Gotthard Base Tunnel a lot of time was spent to determine the rock conditions that were to be expected and the corresponding requirements for the open gripper TBM. Naturally these investigations focussed on the reachable advance rates and the respective costs. In the meantime the excavation is finished, the concrete works completed, the railway components are installed and the tunnel was officially opened 1 June 2016. Today we can say, that most of the decisions taken in the design phase were correct. But the experience show us as well, that the behavior of the rock mass was not always predicted fully correct. The flexibility in choice of different rock support elements and respective numbers was mandatory. This was only possible due to suitable requirements for the TBM and the correct implementation by the manufacturer. This presentation summarizes the most important facts from the TBM heading and show where larger differences were encountered. The focus will be on the following topics: Cutter head wear, water inflow, rock burst, squeezing rock, blocked TBM, inner lining and logistics. In the end of every topic the lessons learned will be presented.
