The paper presents the design and research efforts made to successfully construct a rail tunnel which under crossing oblique (60˚) a highway with six-lane and with as little as 2,70 - 3.30m of cover. Geotechnical parameters, tunnelling method selection, construction phases and three-dimensional finite element analyses with ground response and monitoring are discussed. The selected method was the multiple pipes arch, which included the following components: -presupport by the steel pipes (508mm) arch to avoid catastrophic ground loss; - reinforcement of the soil inside the pipes arch by grouting or fibber glass anchors; - supporting the pipes with steel ribs (I160) founded on the pipe piles and included in primary shotcreted lining (20cm);
