Soil conditioning testing and monitoring for the Port Miami Tunnel
The Port Miami Tunnel project in Florida, USA, involved construction of twin-bore, 12.9 m diameter, 1.3 km long tunnels through challenging ground conditions comprising a variable sequence of limestone and sand layers, including a highly porous, coarsely graded coralline limestone with high permeability and groundwater pressures. Effective conditioning of the excavated soil/rock materials was essential for controlled EPB tunnelling. To assess the ground conditions that could be effectively conditioned, a laboratory test programme was undertaken prior to construction. This included a series of index tests covering a wide range of conditioning treatments and samples properties, followed by a series of advanced model tests to investigate EPB tunnelling operations under pressurised conditions.Recipient :
