The Metro Line 2 of Warsaw is a urban underground railway, being part of the city’s strategy for sustainable transport. Its construction was awarded to a Joint Venture leaded by the Italian company ASTALDI S.p.A.. At the end of 2013 the J.V. successfully completed the construction of the two tunnels which represent the most interesting and challenging part of the project, with the use of 4 TBM with a cut diameter of 6.27 m. Figure 1 shows two pictures of the EPB-TBMs used in Warsaw Metro. This was the first time that the mechanized tunnelling technology was applied in Poland to excavate a tunnel in urban environment. EPB technology was chosen with the goal to minimize settlements in heavily populated areas. Significant challenges were faced during the excavation below the district of Warsaw called “Praga”, where the distance between the TBM shields and the foundations of old and crumbling buildings were just few meters.
