Planning and Building Deep Shafts

The objective of this study is to describe the construction of Deep Shafts in the Mar mountain range in the Brazilian rainforest area surrounding Caraguatatuba. These shafts were built employing technology called Blind Shafts, recently introduced in Brazil. It involves drilling deep shafts with large diameters into sound rock. The Pilot Shaft is enlarged in a single step and is conventionally drilled from the surface, thus eliminating the need for tunnels or galleries at the bottom end of the perforation, as would be performed when applying the Raise Boring method. This technology uses only water and all material is removed from the perforation by the Reverse Circulation process. In 2011, 04 shafts were implanted, measuring 2 meters in diameter and 560 meters in depth. They were then connected to the tunnel built to pipeline gas from the Mexilhão Platform.
