METRO S.A in Santiago de Chile is increasing its net by two new lines: 3 and 6. The new lines will prolong the existing Metro net in approx. 38 km; nearly entire length will be excavated using conventional excavation methods. Specifically Line 3 includes 17 stations, 16 construction access shafts and 34 ventilation shafts. The Line 3 alignment crosses historical city center where underpasses buildings of significant historical value and also solves the connectivity to 4 existing Metro lines: 1, 2, 4 and 5; and underpasses the new Line 6. This paper describes the approaches that had been used during basic and detail engineering: conventional excavation methods for stations and interstations tunnels in cohesive gravels, silty sands and clays soils under shallow overburden; 3D modelling, use of shotcrete as final lining; and seismic design of shafts and tunnels in one of the most seismic active area in the world.
