  Line 5 tunnels construction challenges – Metro de Caracas, section Plaza Venezuela – Parque del este

  Metro de Caracas Line 5 construction has about 7,5 km of EPB Shield Tunnel and 5 stations constructed with the NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method). Due to the Caracas Valley heterogeneous underground, the existing water table in the whole alignment, high population density and superficial and underground boundary structures, the construction execution has have some high grade difficulties for the twin tunnels excavation. The object of the following paper is to present three particular cases and their solutions: 1) TBM Crossing Guaire River and Lincoln Bridge, East Freeway's and El Pulpo Freeway. 2) TBM Crossing under UNEFA building: In this case was necessary to program a TBM shutdown S-430 (right side) to cut a UNEFA's building perimeter wall metallic pile 3) TBM crossing under NATM Tunnel in Bello Campo Station.
