Due to multiple additions of adjacent municipalities, the size of the city of Lugano has been grow-ing over the last decade. The agglomerate of Lugano has currently approximately 125’000 inhabi-tants who need an efficient transport system. The last decade has also seen the development of the Valley of Vedeggio as an industrial and services area (research and banking institutes). The Breganzona – Massagno hill, a densely populated area, separates The Valley of Vadeggio and the city of Lugano. The rapid worsening of the roads system of the Lugano area, due to the increase of traffic, has resulted in the need of extending the public transportation network, in order to connect the center of the city to the industrial and services area. The new Tramway system will con-nect the city of Lugano to the Valley of Vedeggio (on the West side of the city), through a tunnel that will by-pass under the densely populated area on the hill. Thanks to an underground station located 50 m under the Lugano train station FFS, the system will also be connected to the high speed railway and the regional railway networks. The project of the priority phase in-cludes a first element of a new tram-way line in the Lugano Area, that will connect the Center of Lugano to the Valley of Vedeggio through a 2,2 km tunnel and then, thanks a connection line, will be linked to the existing rail-way FLP located in Bioggio. This will allow the tramway system to reach the Ponte Tresa border, one of the most important access point for frontiers workers coming from Italy. A second element towards Manno, will connect the Molinazzo intermodal station to the industrial area of Suglio at the Lugano Nord highway exit. The timetable provides for a connection between Lugano center and Ponte Tresa every 15 min-utes, the same time interval is expected between Lugano Center and Manno Suglio. Therefore the Lugano Center – Molinazzo Intermodal Station line will have connections in each direction every 7,5 minutes.
