  Vezia - Crespera Cable Tunnel

  As part of the complementary works for the Gotthard Tunnel’s track, inside theproject, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps, in order to provide electricity to the new railway Ceneri base Tunnel, close to the southern portal of a densely urbanized area located near the city of Lugano, named Vezia, it was decided to build a new tunnel where other overhead facility lines in the region could also be installed. The new cable tunnel will be connected to the existing ones, through the excavation of special inclined bypasses, to allow a number of service suppliers an optimal management ojeopf their infrastructures. This new tunnel under construction (3.6 meters in diameter) is the latest work of the same type to be realized in the urban area of the city of Lugano. In fact, since the early 60’s, a large number of little tunnels were excavated to house the infrastructures of the city of Lugano (water supply, sewage disposal, gas, electricity). This solution allowed to reduce the impact of all the facilities inside an heavily built urban area like the one of Lugano. This new tunnel houses a large part of the overhead power lines and other management facilities of the railway Ceneri Base Tunnel [1]. A number of other tunnels are scheduled to be excavated in order to allow other institutions a better management of their infrastructures.
