Delhi Metro Line-8/Phase-3 TBM tunnels underpass the operating underground Metro Line-2 (near existing Hauz Khas station) with low cover. Since the existing tunnels of Line-2 will be under operation during the construction of the new Line-8, scientific design was carried out in order to determine the critical factors that govern the interaction of the two twin bore tunnels (existing and under construction) and thus to propose the best effective method of construction along with the strict monitoring instrumentation that should be carried out, in order for the tunnel construction to be executed with the most safe conditions. The influence of the tunnel underpassing is predicted, using both analytical calculations with closed form solution and full Stage-3 three-dimensional analysis. The great challenge of the project is the continuous operation of the existing Line-2 during the construction of the new tunnels. The under-passing of the first EPB-TBM fulfilled the third week of January 2015, while the second EPB-TBM will underpass the second week of March 2015. The design procedure, the predicted behavior of the tunnels’ interaction, the proposed monitoring instrumentation program, and, comparison of the above with the actual results and measurements during the under-passing, is the main scope of the present study.
