The Frejus Tunnel is part of the international highway between Italy and France. The tunnel links the two cities of Bardonecchia (Italy) and Modane (France). The total length is 12.89 m with a maximum overburden of 1.750 m. It is one of the main trans-Alpine transport routes across the France-Italian border, serving almost the 80% of the commercial traffic between the two Nations. From April 2004, the EU Directive 2004/54/EU prescribes all the trans-European highway tunnels to be equipped with safety exits spaced of 500 m, following the occurrence in rapid succession of a series of serious accidents. The idea of the Safety Gallery was born in order to detach the traffic along the two directions along two distinct infrastructures, therefore reducing the risk of clashes between the two traffic streams and allowing the timely and effective intervention of the emergency services along both sides, in all weather conditions.
