The construction of the stormwater spillover sewage tunnel of the Pinos Sub-basin is part of the stormwater management plan launched by the Madrid City Council in order to meet requirements imposed for the spills on the Manzanares river (Madrid City river). Infrastructure was designed to improve quality of the spills on the above cited river and the capacity of the existing pipe sewer as well as to collect the spillovers of several of the existing sewage network in the North Basin in order to limit their flow rates during the storm with return period of 2 years. The flow is collected by means of spill chambers in the existing sewer pipes and driven along the 2.6 km of new tunnel. Finally, the flow is driven to a storm pond through a flow splitter located in the point of lowest level of the alignment.
