Cross-City-Link – Optimization of the Smoke Extraction System

Cross-City-Link – Optimization of the Smoke Extraction System

wtc2015_full_waelchli-1

S. Waelchli / J. Badde

The approximately 5 km long Weinberg Tunnel, the enclosed ramp towards Zurich Altstetten sta-tion, and the 420 m long railway station “Löwenstrasse” together form the Cross-City-Link under-ground tunnel system. In normal operation the system is naturally ventilated due to the piston effect of the trains and the ambient portal pressure differences. No mechanical ventilation is re-quired for a rail tunnel of this length according to Swiss norms. In the case of an emergency, a mechanical ventilation system becomes necessary. The main goal of the ventilation system is to keep the shopping area in the concourse level above the underground railway station free of smoke and to provide the possibility of a safe escape for the passengers in the railway station. Extracting the smoke at the platform level minimises the smoke spread within the railway station
