Development of Decision Support System on tunnel diagnosis
Managing a large register of tunnels requires dealing with the need of guaranteeing a good safety and service level while optimising their overall maintenance cost. This is particularly critical for infrastructure owners with an important number of tunnels, which implies large tunnel condition heterogeneity, such as: urban or mountainous environment, climatic conditions, geological and hydrogeological grounds, different construction methods, or traffic conditions. In order to help managers with tunnel maintenance decisions, one of the research strands within the EU project NeTTUN (New Technologies for Tunnelling and UNderground works, www.nettun.org, funded under objective NMP.2011.4.0-2 of the 7th Research Framework Programme of European Union), conducted by a team of experts from Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) and researchers from the School of Computing at the University of Leeds, aims to develop a Decision Support System (DSS). This system will facilitate the decision-making process concerning tunnel diagnosis, assisting maintenance experts in defining the appropriate strategy in terms of inspections and maintenance operations. The DSS will thus enable the implementation of a systematic approach for tunnel diagnosis, based on tools with objective criteria, using a sustainable expert knowledge and creating conditions for a more effective and efficient training of new experts. This paper presents the different steps carried out: the development of a knowledge base in the form of an ontology and the development of the first component of the DSS focused on pathology assessment.
