Utility Plants in Underground Rock caverns in Singapore

Utility Plants in Underground Rock caverns in Singapore

wtc2015_full_rehbock-sander-2

M. Rehbock-Sander / R. Trunk

Singapore’s population and economy will grow in the coming decades. This growth will put more pressure on limited land, water and energy resources. As the city becomes more dense, it needs to expand its water supply, improve the water efficiency, reduce the exposure to the environment, and substantially improve the production of energy. Apart from reclaiming more land and building more intensively, Singapore is developing an underground land use master plan that identifies potential uses for this space. As it is, the city already makes good use of underground space with its MRT stations, shopping malls, the planned Underground Science City (USC) with 40 interconnected caverns for data centres, research and development labs, and, most recently, the Jurong Rock Caverns, which will be Southeast Asia’s first underground oil and petrochemical storage facility.
