Recently, continuous ground degradations with a time-dependent behaviour have led to damage of the linings or floor heaving in several in-service tunnels. These time-dependent deformations in tunnels may cause serious social and economic losses. However there is no diagnostic method and a new method is needed to assess these time-dependent behaviours of rock mass behind tunnel lining until its maintenance phase. We carried out a series ofThe laboratory test results shows that the seismic velocity appears to decreases rapidly in early phase and goes gradually slow.t may be possible to obtain a useful index that indicates the extent of the degradation of rock mass by continuous monitoring of time-dependent changes of seismic velocity.
