“Piazza Meda” underground car park in Milan (ITA)
The “Piazza Meda” car park in Milan is located in one of the most prestigious squares of the city, close to the Duomo and only 20 m away from the Belgioioso Palace, masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. The park has 5 floors, with a depth of approximately 17 meters. The most challenging aspect of the design was the analysis and the prediction of the behavior of the retaining walls, especially in terms of deformation, taking into account the extreme proximity of historical and monumental buildings. Part of the car park was realized through the “top-down” technique, in order to keep the roadways open to ordinary traffic; most of it was however realized by means of the “bottom-up” methodology, with diaphragm walls supported by three rows of pre-stressed anchors. Calculations were performed using a finite element model, capable to simulate the phases of execution and the soil-structure interaction; moreover, in the followings, a comparison between the expected analytical displacements and the measured ones will be shown.
