  Successful engagement of mechanized tunnelling technology in Russia

  With the first use of a 6.24m-diameter Mixshield TBM for the Metro Moscow in 1987, the way was paved for a successful market entry of German manufactured mechanized tunnelling equipment in Russia. Another 13 years passed before re-entering the market in Russia with the contract for a 14.2m-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Lefortovo road tunnel in Moscow. Since then Russia has invested strongly in the expansion of its infrastructure such as roads and rail networks and this got an additional boost with the award of the FIFA World Cup 2018 to Russia which is of an important boost for the country’s economic development. This publication focuses on the development and the demand for soft and hard rock TBMs for metro, road and rail projects in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi.
