Measurement of Cutter Forces Acting on a Double Disc Cutter in a Full–scale Linear Rock Cutting Test
Linear cutting test shows the high reliability of test results in the measurement of cutter acting force because this test use a full-size disc cutter and practical test conditions. That is the reason why many researchers performed the linear cutting test for the design and performance evaluation of tunnel boring machines (Bilgin et al., 1999; Chang et al., 2011; Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997; Snowdon et al., 1982). The normal force of disc cutter is useful for checking the allowable load of disc cutter due to the highest cutter acting force and is helpful for computing thrust forces of TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine). The rolling force of disc cutter is also valuable for calculating torque of TBM cutterhead (Entacher et al., 2012). The forces that act on disc cutters are dependent on not only the contact area between rock surface and cutter ring but also rock strength (Chang et al., 2013). This study carried out the comparison of cutter acting forces on double disc cutter and single disc cutter during linear cutting tests.
