Discontinuities on Hydrogeology of Underground Oil Storage and Hydrodynamic Containment
Hydrodynamic containment principle in oil storage cavern is essential concept forsuccessful storage of oil products in underground cavern while avoiding leakage of products. Thus, hydrodynamic containment should be ensured throughout the stages of design, construction and operation. From the literature review, it is found that heterogeneity in continuum based modeling requires additional safety margin. In fact, discontinuities are one of the main causes of heterogeneity of rock mass. In this respect it is attempted to identify the effect of discontinuity on gas tightness of storage cavern by observing the variation of hydraulic gradient of homogeneous continuum model and that of equivalent discontinuum models. As a result, it is consistently shown variation of gas tightness and subsequent leakage through weak joints at moderate water curtain pressure.
