A holistic approach for the design and optimization of Metro tunnel ventilation shafts considering safety issues and also particular thermal aspects for tropical weather areas
This paper presents a holistic approach for performance based designs of tunnel ventilation system and more particularly for ventilation shafts design in metro projects. This approach takes into account various parameters of a project that may influence the design and the optimization of ventilation shafts. Project geometry, train characteristics, operating parameters, evacuation means and particular climate conditions of tropical weather areas are considered in the method analyses. The paper presents some applications in two recent metro project (Chennai in India and Rio de Janeiro L4 in Brazil) for which it has been possible to avoid the construction of midtunnel shafts based on accurate assessment with the proposed holistic approach.
