Methods for Reducing Contamination Risk of Earth ContainingHeavy Metals from Tunnel Excavation
In the construction of two tunnels on Shin-Tomei Expressway in Japan, excavatedrock and earth were found to contain arsenic and pyrite which can lead to the release of arsenic in thelocal area. This resulted in a significant change to the excavation and filling plan as well as to theconstruction cost and time required for completion. The risk of encountering heavy metals-contaminated earth may be different from the earlyassumptions made during the survey and planning stages. Therefore, it is important to conductpreliminary research and investigate possible countermeasures well in advance. This paper describes, from the authors’ experience the items examined during the planning and construction stages, presents countermeasures based on the actual distribution of heavy metals in the earth, and describesa proposal for minimizing the extent of contamination risk.Recipient :
