The Decision Aids for Tunnelling (DAT) as a tool for the estimation of tunnel construction time and costs in blocky rock conditions
Face instabilities in blocky rock conditions may have great effects on normal tunnelling operations, especially if the excavation is performed by tunnel boring machines. Increasing maintenance requirements, construction delays and cost overruns are generally registered in these conditions. In this context, the Decision Aids for Tunnelling (DAT) represent a very useful tool to assess, on a probabilistic basis, the effect that blocky rock conditions may have on the tunnel construction time and costs. In the present paper, the DAT have been used to assess the effect that blocky rock conditions may have on the ordinary TBM performance. The construction of a 10 km long tunnel has been simulated in both “normal” geological conditions, i.e. no face instabilities expected, and blocky rock conditions. The simulation results clearly show the great effects that blocky rock conditions may produce on TBM tunnelling.
