On the compatibility between support elements in a rock support system for underground excavation

An underground rock support system usually comprises a number of internal and external support elements. All the elements should be compatible in their deformability in order to achieve a satisfactory support effect, particularly in squeezing and burst-prone rock conditions. The concept of the so-called yield rock support has been widely accepted in tunneling and mining engineering, but the efforts to realize the concept have been put in different directions in the two branches so far. The tunneling branch is committed to make external support elements deformable, while the mining branch prefers yield rock bolts. The yield support elements available nowadays are reviewed first. A new yield rock bolt, D-Bolt, is then introduced. The concept of compatible support system is finally discussed for the aim of improving the efficiency of the current support systems for tunneling in difficult rock conditions.
