The contribution presents a new guidance technology for double shield TBMs. It is based on a digital shield camera system on the back shield (gripper shield) that tracks a special designed target unit mounted on the front shield, and a conventional guidance system using a robotic total station and two motortargets. An additional component is an automatic tail skin clearance measurement system based on ultrasonic sensors for optimal ring sequence planning. With the new guidance technology the absolute position and orientation of both shields can be determined automatically and with high accuracy and reliability. Since January 2013 the new technology is successfully applied at the 32.9 km long Koralm tunnel project in Austria to guide two double shield TBMs. Experiences and measuring results obtained in the project are discussed.
