  The Scanning of Tunnels – The Portuguese Experience

  In 2004, the National Railway Network of Portugal started to use laser scanning technology for the inspection of tunnels. In partnership with a German company, all tunnels in the Portuguese Railway network have been digitized in a campaign of three weeks duration. The entire inspection process has been improved considerably by intensive usage of the scan data. Software tools for field and office work have been developed in close co-operation between the partners. The paper presents the experiences gained in the past years. All aspects of information obtained with the tunnel laser scanning technology will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be given to usage of thermography and visual image data. It will also include practical examples which provide information about a wide range of applications.
