Fibre reinforced precast concrete segments: design and applications
The use of structural fiber as replacement of the traditional reinforcement in precast concrete segmental linings is becoming a widespread practice. Prove of this are the more than forty examples of application in tunnels and vertical shafts that are already constructed or under construction in different countries all over the world. The success of using fibers in these structural elements lies in the mechanical improvements as well as in economic that could be achieved. In this sense, the main goals of this scientific contribution consist of, on the one hand, presenting and analyzing some of the more relevant applications of fiber reinforced precast concrete segmental linings existing up to date and, on the other hand, presenting a numeral strategy to optimize the reinforcement in this sort of elements as well as its application to recent real examples already constructed or under construction in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
